What is Cultural Sensitivity?

The answer is simple, although the term has been exploited and overused in the past decade or more. In simple terms, cultural sensitivity is simply understanding and learning about cultural differences between similar and dissimilar traditions. The basic goal in sensitivity training is for participants to avoid judgement, evaluation, assessment or even viewing other cultures through the lens of one’s own culture. Think of it this way: when children see other children who have dissimilar routines, eating habits, or other activities, they typically say that the unfamiliar behavior is weird or odd, just because it is different than what they do. Some kids never outgrow this habit and continue to label different behaviors as odd during adulthood. The simple solution: education and experience. Human beings are more likely to judge from afar and less likely to do so once cross-cultural relationships are established. Our job is to provide tools for participates to facilitate and reduce the cultural gap when opportunities arise.

How is Our Cultural Sensitivity Training Different?

In the past ten or fifteen years, most employers have opted to offer web-based cultural appreciation and sensitivity training seminars or webinars, which are generally completed in an hour or less, assessed by a follow up exam, and typically provide a written certification of completion. We provide an in-person, high energy presentation that lasts about an hour. We typically present during a working lunch, and lunch is always included. Webinars are for businesses who just need to check a box. Our seminars are designed for business and organizations that send employees abroad or entertain clients from different cultures. Our clients are serious about global fluency and cross-cultural education.
